Let's start by saying that I am a Carly Simon fan and have collected all of her recordings. What a dreadful collection of music.the words nightmare, awful and unpleasant come to mind. Carly has had ups and downs in her, mostly respectable, recording career. But then she released "This Kind Of Love". Save your money, do not buy this stinker. Let's pretend it never happened.
I am a huge Carly Simon fan, as well as a fan of Brasilian music, particularly Jazz Samba. When I saw that Carly Simon had released a CD that included Brasilian music, I eagerly anticipated its arrival, despite several reviews that suggested she had lost her voice. I think she peaked in around 1990, with the terrific "Have You Seen Me Lately," but I've enjoyed recent recordings such as the 2000 "Bedroom Tapes" and her 2005 "Moonlight Serenade." That said, I found "This Kind of Love" to lack any quality songs -- her rap is cloying and background vocals intrude virtually every time she reaches a high note. I'm not storing this CD with her others in my collection; I'd rather forget I bought it.
Outstanding album. Lyrics touching and go right to the heart, especially those songs that are obviously dedicated to her kids. The "rap" song is not my favorite, but it certainly puts a new twist on Carly.
I was VERY DISAPPOINTED. Her voice is still the same, but her music was boring.
Listeners need to keep in mind, Simon has never been one to follow trends and her career has been so sporatic because it is easy to expect a certain style from her and have her sail off in a complete different direction with each new release. Still, this work is indicative of a musician of great accomplishment.Simon is such an icon and is behind so many great songs it is easy to dismiss this work after a few listens as 'not as great'.
That was another space in time for us and for her. As one reviewer remarked, Carly Simon is not going to give us another 'No Secrets','Playing Possum' or 'Boys in The Trees".
Always chronically under-rated and often over-looked, Simon has never really gotten the recognition she has deserved and unfortunately, it again seems to be the case with this latest work. But this intimate look at where she is now is quite remarkable.
In Fact, I would venture to say she sounds more vibrant and energized than most all her contemporaries. But you have all her trademarks here, unforgetable melodies and smart, concise lyrics.
This is no exception, but it deserves many listens and an open mind.
